Do black cats malt? Yes, they do. Like all other cats that have fur and like the majority of other animals. Black cats will shed their fur throughout the year. The amount of fur that they shed and the times that it will happen can vary due to circumstances such as their diet, health, weather, and so on.
It Is Perfectly Normal
It can be rather alarming to sit on the sofa and notice there is black fur all over the place. The fact is in most cases it is perfectly normal for your black cat to malt.
Us people shed our hair, so do dogs and so do most other animals. So, there is no need to be worried or freaked out if your black cat buddy is leaving fur all over the house.
When Will My Black Cat Malt?
If only this was a straight forward answer that would suit all cats! While all cats are different, most cats do some serious malting twice a year.
They will get rid of their ‘winter coat’ usually in the spring as things start to get a bit warmer. Then as we come into autumn/fall they can shed again in preparation for a new winter coat.
Of course, this may differ from cat to cat, however, the majority will malt twice a year.
Secret Malting Spots
Some people have said that their cats do not malt a great deal, but then they will find a spot under the bed or somewhere like that covered in cat hair.
As we all know black cats like their privacy and sometimes when they are malting, they will have a spot and just let it all fall out.
Regular Grooming Can Help
Have you ever been stroking your black cat or had them sitting on your knee and then noticed that your hand or leg is covered in fur?
Well, while cats are very clean creatures (cleaner than most humans!) they can need a bit of help from you.
Not all cats like to be combed, but if yours does, giving them a nice combing once and a while can get rid of the dead fur before it starts shedding all over your house.
Do Some Black Cats Not Malt?
This is a tricky one to answer as it is not the fact that the cat is black that causes the malting, but the species of cat.
There are some cats that shed considerably less most notably a sphynx. By the way is there anything more magical looking than a black sphynx?
Other species such as Siberian and Bengal are known to shed much less. They still shed, but it is much less extreme.
My Thoughts
Our American Shorthair called Coco does shed fur but not a lot really.
We live in a warm climate all-year-round so Coco doesn’t really develop much of a winter coat.
Approaching the summer months, you do see loose fur on his coat when stroking him but there is not much at all.
I think the Bombay Cat and the American Shorthair are particularly good cats when it comes to the amount of fur that they shed.
I don’t really notice a lot of cat hairs on my clothes and compared to past experiences with this, I’m really glad this is the case.
