Do black cats like dogs? Maybe. Cats and dogs can become very good friends, but there is a lot of variables in making this happen.
Natural Enemies
“Fighting like cats and dogs” is a phrase that many people have used over the years. Cats and dogs in theory are enemies, but that is not technically true.
A dog does not just start chasing a cat and a black cat does not just start running away from a dog because they hate each other.
It has been said that the reason for this is a deep-rooted instinct that they have. This is especially true for dogs who love to chase small fast-moving things!
Becoming Friends
Many homes will have both cats and dogs and have no problems, well apart from the odd scuffle here and there.
The thing is, cats and dogs that are raised together will very quickly at the least learn to tolerate each other.
More often than not they will grow to become quite fond of each other.
Black cats can make awesome pets and it is great to see them become close to a canine friend.
Even though us cat lovers know the friendship is always on the cat’s terms!
Getting To Know Each Other
It is easier to get a black cat and a dog to coexist if they meet at a very young age.
This though is not always possible. One way to help a black cat like a dog more and vice versa is by letting them get to know each other properly
Make sure they are comfortable with each other before leaving them alone together.
Have small face to face meetings so they can get to know each other’s scents.
We all know a cat needs space, so make sure the cat has a dog-free zone it can go to when it has had enough of the dog. Start things slowly and it should be fine.
Some Just Do Not Get Alone
For the most part, eventually, a black cat and a dog are going to at the very least tolerate each other’s existence.
Even if they are not “close” they can deal with being in each other’s presence. This can on rare occasions not be the case and no matter what your black cat will not like the dog.
As strange as this sounds, this can be a personality issue. We all have people that we know or work with that we just do not like.
Well, this can be the same for a cat and a dog too. If this does happen you may want to think about making sure your pets have plenty of their own space.
Dinner For One
We all know that most dogs are happy to just eat wherever, but our black cat friends can be a tad more selective.
With this in mind, it can be a good idea if it is possible in your home to make sure that your cat has its own area for its food and is not having to eat right next to the dog.
Even having your dog bowl at one end of the kitchen and the cat bowl at the other can make all the difference in the world to your cat tolerating your dog more.
My Thoughts
In my experience, I have had a dog and cat co-exist.
They didn’t just co-exist, they loved each other. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier and the tiny Tabby kitten became family instantly!
I was apprehensive at first to let them interact but I took a chance and the female dog picked up the kitten by the scruff of the neck, carried her over to the fireplace, and gave her a good clean.
Such a heart-warming moment.
They were inseparable from that moment on. The cat seemed to see the dog as her Mom and bizarrely, even as an adult the cat would suckle on the dog’s teats.
It was very weird but sweet at the same time lol.
Do Black Cats Like Dogs? – Summary
Do black cats like dogs? In short maybe so, maybe not, it depends…
Dogs and cats aren’t necessarily natural enemies.
The cat and dog may need some time to get to know each other and this can help for a smooth relationship.
Giving each animal its own space to eat and drink may help reduce friction between pets.
