Ever wanted to know which long-haired black cat breeds are most common and their names? This is the blog post for you…
Which Black Cat Breeds Have Long Hair?
My research points to 3 breeds in particular that will have cat enthusiasts who are up for the challenge of having a longhair cat very interested indeed.
Here are the cats…
Maine Coon
The Maine Coon originates from Maine USA and is known for its ability to catch mice.
The Maine Coon has been used on ships and farms for its refined ability to control pests.
The Maine Coon is a natural breed that is pretty rare amongst domestic cats but the true origins of this breed are somewhat unknown having links to the Vikings.
The Maine Coon is a large cat weighing somewhere between 9 to 18 pounds (4kg to 8kg) when fully grown at around the age of 5 years old.
This beautiful cat has a long silky coat that isn’t too difficult to maintain.
The silky texture prevents matting and with regular grooming, you will have a tangle-free and beautiful kitty…
American Longhair
The American Longhair is a man-made breed that was actually created accidentally.
In an attempt to create an American Shorthair with green eyes and the coat of a Persian cat, the American Longhair was born.
This fairly large beauty has a life expectancy of around 12 to 17 years and is quite independent but not to the extent that you don’t get to pet them.
Almost certainly due to the fact that the American Longhair is a man-made breed, daily grooming is required to prevent tangles and matting.
If you are considering living with an American Longhair be prepared for a daily fur maintenance routine and bathing once a week.
This can be challenging but the rewards will be worth it, seeing that beautiful, tangle-free coat.
Chantilly-Tiffany
I must admit before researching for this blog I hadn’t heard of the Chantilly-Tiffany, what a beautiful name!
Of all of the long-haired black cat breeds this one caught me off guard.
The Chantilly-Tiffany originates from the United States and the first litter was seen in 1969 in New York.
This gorgeous breed requires a lot of playtime and exercise to enable their growth so if you a looking for a passive cat then you may want to look at another breed.
Despite having such a long coat the Chantilly-Tiffany doesn’t require a lot of grooming as their fine silky coat is not prone to matting.
Occasional grooming is recommended.
This breed can be considered to have a moderate temperament not being too demanding regarding attention but not so independent that you can’t go near them.
The Chantilly-Tiffany can have health issues with wax build-up in the ears so regular cleaning is required.
My Final Thoughts
With long-haired black cat breeds coming in different shapes and sizes, with different health and grooming requirements, there’s a lot to consider when making ownership decisions.
On my journey building this blog, I’m learning a lot about just how different cats can be from breed to breed.
We humans are all different and we all have different wants and needs just like animals do.
When picking a cat based on the color and length of its fur I think time is needed before making decisions.
A lot of “designer” cats have health or grooming issues because they are brand-new breeds in terms of history and nature.
We have a black male American Shorthair and his grooming routine is virtually none existent. We would groom him if we had to of course but that’s something that we don’t have to think about.
Depending on where you are in the world, long-haired black cat breeds might not be the easiest to come by due to their roots.
