Do black cats like other cats? Maybe, black cats can be friendly with other cats, but each black cat is unique.

Everyone Is Unique

It is quite unfair to say that all black cats are antisocial and can be aloof, even though that is the reputation they have.

The fact of the matter is that each cat, including black cats, has their own personality so some might get along better with other cats than others.

Sometimes your cat will want nothing to do with you, other times they are all over you. They can be this way with other cats as well.

The Best Friendships Develop Over Time

Many studies have been done that talk about how a major reason black cats (and cats in general) are taken to shelters is due to not getting along with other pets.

Like people, cats can take their time to open up. So, it is perfectly natural if your black cat and other cat do not get along right away.

It is important to make sure they are not hurting each other, but even if they do not develop a ‘love’ for each other, they may eventually learn to at least tolerate each other.

Black Cats Are Social Creatures

Ok, so there is always one that is different and as we have already stated, each cat is different.

However, truth be told, cats, in general, are very social creatures. Especially when they are kittens!

Even though your cat may seem like they always want their own company, as long as it is on their terms, they can like the company of other cats.

Kittens Like To Play

While black cats may like to socialize as they get older, they will start to want their own space.

Kittens, on the other hand, love to be with other kittens. You can have kittens from different litters, put them together and they will be buddies right away.

Keeping Things Separate

Did you know that black cats and other cats, in general, can find sharing a litter box stressful?

With this in mind, if you want to help your black cat get along with another cat, make sure they have their own stuff.

You do not need two climbing posts or two of each toy. Having separate litter boxes, food bowls, and so on though is something you really want to make sure you have.

My Thoughts

Our American Shorthair called Coco isn’t the most social of cats. He is great once he gets to know you but until that point, he’s very shy.

When strangers visit our home, Coco will run away as fast as he can to find a hiding place. He really is scared!

Whenever we feed the street cats, Coco isn’t scared or aggressive with the other cats though.

He’ll have a sniff and is very slow, gentle, and calm. You can see that he is wary but I think I’ve only seen him hiss at another cat on a couple of occasions.

In my experience, cats are very much like humans when it comes to having an individual character.

They are very distinct from cat to cat.

Do Black Cats Like Other Cats? – Summary

Do black cats like other cats? Well, it depends as every cat is unique regardless of their fur color.

It may take a little time for your black cat to develop a relationship with another cat.

Cats are very social in general and this applies to black cats too.

Kittens love to play and are extremely social with each other so relationships can be built from a very early age.

It may be a good idea to give your cats their own space and not to expect them to share things like litter trays and food bowls.
