Do black cats get along with dogs? Black cats are not a breed of domestic cat, there a 22 breeds that can have a solid black coat. Black cats are just as likely to get along with dogs as any other cat.
There is very little evidence to suggest that the color of a cat’s fur determines the temperament and character of the cat.
Are Black Cats Good with Dogs?
Every cat should be looked at as an individual and there are many factors that can give a cat its traits.
There is almost no evidence to suggest that a cat with black fur will get along any better or worse than a cat with another colored fur.
Do Cats and Dogs get Along?
Cats and dogs have the stereotype of not being friends at all. We’ve all heard the saying ‘fight like cat and dog’ and I’m pretty sure that you have seen cartoons where cats and dogs aren’t necessarily the best of friends.
Is this stereotype correct?
Cats and dogs are very different animals and there can be issues where they see each other as potential prey.
However, a lot of dogs and cats get along just fine and can often be best friends.
I once had a female dog and she raised a kitten in the home from a very young age.
The kitten was mothered by the dog and by the time the kitten had become an adult cat the bond was strong.
They would often groom each other, play together and on one or two occasions I spotted the cat suckling from the dog for comfort. Weird but sweet at the same time… lol.
Can a Cat and Dog Live Together?
The simple answer is yes and many do. Cats and dogs coexisting is extremely common although it may come with its challenges.
Many believe that if a cat and dog are raised together as babies, they will grow up tolerating each other and may even see each other as siblings.
It’s definitely not uncommon to see cats and dogs playing together giving each other playful nips and it’s especially heart-warming to see a cat and dog sleeping together.
How Long Does it take for a Dog and Cat to get Along?
According to Liz Palika, the process can take two to three weeks, however, it may be sooner and maybe not at all.
Unfortunately, the reality is that some dogs and cats just don’t get along at all and may never will.
When answering the question ‘do black cats get along with dogs?’ I’m sure you can see why fur color may not play a part in this and each cat and dog have to be judged individually.
My Thoughts
In my experience, I have seen a black cat coexist with a dog but this black cat was a female of old age.
She was very independent and always wanted her own space. I don’t think I can base much on this particular experience because she wouldn’t bother anybody unless they were invading her space.
We have an American Shorthair called Coco and he is very jumpy and shy around any person or animal other than my partner and me.
I can’t see him getting along with a dog but I don’t think it’s fair to make that judgment without trying.
I do have aspirations of having a dog in the future when we move to a more rural part of the island so maybe I can add to this blog post based on more of my own personal experience.
As I mentioned earlier in this blog, black cats aren’t a breed and there’s a lot of variables involved when it comes to any pet’s behaviour.
Each cat has to be judged individually in my opinion and coupled with that, there is so little evidence or proof that a cat’s fur color will determine it’s characteristics or temperament.
Do Black Cats Get Along With Dogs? – Summary
Do black cats get along with dogs? In short yes and no.
Black cats aren’t a breed so each cat should be judged on an individual basis.
Cats and dogs can live together and can often be friends or even family-like but there are some circumstances where this isn’t possible.
If a dog or cat sees its opposite as prey then it’s a non-starter.
In my experience, I’ve seen cats and dogs coexist and one of the cats was black.
