Black Cat Appreciation Day: A Wonderful Celebration

We have an American Shorthair called Coco and we truly appreciate him every day.

Black cat appreciation day is a day where the bad reputation of black cats is addressed and cast aside in a celebration of our furry friends!

When is Black Cat Appreciation Day?

Black Cat Appreciation Day is on August 17th and is observed by encouraging others to adopt and show love to black cats.

The hashtag; #BlackCatAppreciationDay is used on social media platforms to spread the black cat love and hopefully trend and go viral.

Reputation

Due to superstition and symbolism, in some parts of the world, there is a lot of negativity surrounding black cats.

I wrote a blog post on superstition and black cats that you can read here…

We love cats of all colors, shapes, and sizes and speaking for myself I love all animals, but Black Cat Appreciation Day is very much needed.

I recently wrote a blog post about the spiritual meaning of owning a black cat and during my research, it was highlighted that no domesticated animal on the planet has suffered such a bad rep.

When is National Black Cat Day?

National Black Cat Day is often confused with Black Cat Appreciation Day. National Black Cat Day is on October 27th and is celebrated mainly in the United States.

The two celebrations pretty much have the same meaning and purpose but National Black Cat Day seems to have been established to coincide with the run-up to Halloween.

Black cats and witches will be forever associated, especially at Halloween, so National Black Cat Day gives people awareness on just how vulnerable black cats are.

I hate even typing this, but in some countries, black cats are used for ritualistic purposes around the time of Halloween.

Some animal shelters have had to put a halt to adoptions of black cats around that time of year in order to protect the cats.

My Final Thoughts

Like I mentioned earlier, we truly appreciate having Coco in our home, he is such a valued member of the family.

We will definitely observe Black Cat Appreciation Day every year but without meaning to sound corny, it’s Black Cat Appreciation Day every day for us.

I post twice a day or more on Facebook and Instagram and it’s all black cat related. I also create regular blog posts on this website too so for me appreciating black cats is an everyday occurrence.

For those who don’t have such an intense involvement or no involvement with black cats, I think Black Cat Appreciation Day is a great idea and concept.

Black cats have taken such a beating reputation-wise for far too long now and the rich and deep history of black cats needs to come to the surface.

It’s not all doom and gloom as black cats are becoming increasingly popular amongst pet owners and I think this is due to times changing and a greater awareness of just how vulnerable animals of all colors and breeds can be.

When I check my inbox on a daily basis and also when seeing posts from other members of the black cat community, I’m constantly reminded of just how loved black cats (and all cats) are loved.

Hopefully one day, the negative superstitions surrounding black cats die out completely and everybody can appreciate black cats for what they are and that is beautiful, intelligent, and charismatic creatures…
