Cats are known for having long and very expressive tails.

Their tails can be at many different angles with different shapes and thicknesses.

If you are in the know you can tell a lot about what a cat is feeling at that moment just by looking at its tail.

So, what does it mean when a cat’s tail is upright?

When a cat’s tail is upright especially for a period of time it’s a positive thing.

The cat is feeling calm, confident, and very sociable.

This is very much a sign of friendliness and you may see this when a cat is approaching you.

The tail being upright is used by cats as a greeting with each other and signifies a friendly and welcoming encounter.

Kittens often use this to great their mothers too.

Whenever your cat approaches you with an upright tail it’s a good time to pet your furry friend and you may even consider playing with them as well.

It’s a good idea to engage with your cat at opportunities like this because your cat is full of contentment and confidence.

The Question Mark

You may notice that when your cat’s tail is upright that you can see a curve at the tip of the tail.

This can make the tail take on a question mark shape.

This is an extra indication that your cat is in a playful mood and it’s a good idea to get some playtime in…

My Thoughts

We have a black cat called Coco who features throughout this website.

It’s not an overstatement when I say that his tail is upright a lot!

His tail is up the air so much that people comment on it.

It’s pleasing to know that he feels so happy and relaxed so much of the time.

He also has the question mark tail very often too. I’m going to make an effort to play with him more frequently, especially when I notice the curve in the tip of his tail…
