black cat purr

Fascinating scientific research has pointed to black cats possibly having the best and strongest genes compared to other domestic cats.

The process that gives an animal a black coat is called melanism.

Melanism in cats is thought to make cats more resistant to common diseases and possibly gives them an advantage when hunting.

What about a black cat’s relationship with humans?

Are they more vocal with us? Do they interact with us more compared to other cats? Do they purr more?

Does your black cat purr a lot?

I asked the My Mini Panther Facebook community, ‘does your black cat purr a lot?’ and here are some of their responses…

Melissa “Not really. One purrs occasionally when he’s particularly cuddly or relaxed and the other rarely. When he does it’s so quiet I didn’t think he purred at all until he was about 1!”

John “My cat purrs like crazy when I’m brushing her. She hardly meows at all and when she does it’s very soft”

Marthesse “Yes always purring paddling and head bumping even when he visits the vet x”

Dwaynewendy “YES !!!!! She is purring all the time and loud our gray kitty only purrs about a 1/3 as much”

Tania “Nonstop. He sounds like a lawnmower early on a Saturday morning”

Khalith “She always insists on being the little spoon and going under the blankets with me when I get in bed. Soon as she does she starts purring like crazy. She sleeps purring for as long as she’s cuddling with me. ❤️

Jennifer “My cat purrs quite a lot and also very vocal. He’s a talker.”

Ronald “Yes. She sounds like a new engine”

Karri Schirmer “Yes! And he purrs loud!!! I’ve been on the phone with people and came in the door and picked him up and they are like what is that sound??!!! He also meows likes talkin a lot!!!”

Lisa “My older cat Atticus purrs a lot while he’s sleeping my younger cat binx does the same thing”

Jean “Mine doesn’t purr or meow much. When she does, it’s very soft. The other one is very loud.”

Judy “Bob purrs like crazy, he also talks alot, hes very possessive. Everyone says hes more of a dog than a cat.”

Freada “Only when he’s around my boyfriend. Won’t purr for me. Brat lol.”

Kelly “My Trixie purrs loud and she’s a talker”

MikeandTonya “Yes she does, she’s 14 yrs old, and looks about 5, soon as you make eye contact she starts purring! 💞🐾

Merrilee “And SO LOUD!! We call him the Little Chainsaw”

Aaron “My little man purrs as soon as he gets close to me.”

John “Yes, when I’m sitting on the can and while we cuddle.”

Mary “Yep and the loudest meow of all time lol”

Andy “Yes, constantly. He’s a Bombay”

AmyMy boy purrs like a little motor. It’s a lovely sound. ❣️

Wendy “Yup and she loves to watch tv! ❤️ She fills my broken heart with happiness.”

Matt “My little girl often purrs, but only when she’s near me. It seems like she tries not to purr loudly because she’s afraid of other cats (as a defense mechanism because she is tiny). The first week I had her (back in August), she purred the most when she was on my lap”

Gary “Yes lots of purring from Sooty… especially when she is wanting munchies 😊

My Thoughts

As you can see, many people comment that their black cat purrs a lot.

In my experience, I’ve never seen or heard a cat purr as much as our black cat called Coco.

His purr is very loud and strong and when he’s lying on you purring, you can feel the vibrations.

He even goes into a high-pitched purr sometimes, which sounds a little like whistling.

I’m not saying that black cats purr more than others definitively, however, I must say that black cats seem to have very unique traits…
