When you hear that a black cat having orange eyes is very common it may make you think this means that it is “less special”.
Do not think of it like that, orange just so happens to be one of the most common eye colors, but the color of a cat’s eyes has no bearing on their character.
What Are Other Common Colors?
Of course, you are always going to have that rare color, but along with orange, there are other quite common colors.
Many black cats will also have yellow, green, or a more copper looking pair of eyes, and this along with orange are the most common colors.
Bright or Dark Orange?
The intensity of the orange in your black cats’ eyes all comes down to what is happening on the cellular level.
If a cat has more melanin then they are going to have a much more intense shade of orange in their eyes.
On the flip side of this, if your black cat has more melanocytes then their eyes are going to have a darker appearance.

While orange eyes may be common in black cats, your black cat probably would not have had those orange eyes in the beginning.
One of the things that make black kittens so cute is that for the first few months they have these adorable blue eyes.
By the time they get to around the 6-month mark, their natural color will start to take over and they will be orange, yellow, or whatever color they are going to be.

Can Black Cats Have Orange Eyes? My Thoughts
Our American Shorthair called Coco doesn’t have orange eyes, his eyes appear to be green most of the time but sometimes they look yellow too.
In my experience, Bombay Cats seem to have orange or copper-colored eyes compared to the green or yellow eyes of the other breeds of cats with solid black coats.
The Bombay Cat shares a lot of similarities with the American Shorthair as they are very close relatives.
