Black cat adoption rates aren’t nearly as high as they should be with many cat shelters all over the world being full of black cats.
Awareness is shifting thankfully and black cat superstitions are dying out meaning more and more black cats are finding much-needed homes.
There’s still a lot of work to be done though…
When talking about the touchy subject of black cat adoption, I felt that the best qualified are the black cat community themselves.
I asked the question; “What would you say to someone who is considering adopting a black cat?”.
The response was overwhelming…
I read through the comments on the My Mini Panther Facebook page and picked out my favorites for this blog post.
Black Cat Adoption Advice from the Community
Ruth Marshall We had a black cat that sat in the avocado tree and ate avocados every day… He had the most BEAUTIFUL COAT I’d ever seen…plus he was an awesome friend
Molly Storz I have had 3 black cats and all of them have been the sweetest, funniest babies. It is important to adopt them because they are more likely to be abused and put down than cats of other colors.
Karen Patterson Do it. We had the sweetest black cat Marley. If you said, kiss kiss, he would put his head to your lips and you HAD to make the kissing sound.
Jill Niski Take him in. Black cats are rarely adopted from shelters due to old superstition. I have my boy Midnight and he is a love
Judy Baiardi Adopt! I adopted one 7 years ago, he’s 8 now & the love of my life. He’s not perfect but perfect for me
Diane Dovan Strobeck The same thing I’d tell anyone getting any cat! Get one and love him or her with all your heart! They’re worth everything!
JoAnne Heckman Yes, Black Bombay kitties are cooooool! They are real homebodies, affectionate, great personalities!
Karen Francis Go ahead adopt him or her and Give them a loving home. TheColour black has nothing to do with any aspect of their personality.
Melissa Nowlan DO IT!!!! I have 11 cats (including 2 fosters). 5 of my cats are black and they are the best!!!!! There is just something extra special about them.
Cheryl Molavi My best friend when I was a child was a wonderful black cat. I am now 65 and still dream that he is still alive and waiting for me! I do know that we’ll be together someday.
Lynn Rochon My black cat is the most affectionate and feisty of all my cats and she is missing her foot because she got it bit of by a raccoon when she was born in a dumpster. I would not trade her for anything!
Kathy Kvam I adopted 2 black cats and love them very much. I think black cats are awesome.
Leon Jones We have 4 black cats and they’re nuts!!!! Very different from the other cats we have 10 altogether but I call them the black cat gang.
Paula Culotta Do it because you love cats, not because you want a Halloween prop. Black cats are absolutely amazing.
Lori Buck Decatur I’ve only adopted black cats. The are master cuddlers, empathic, and intuitive.
Mari Lizabeth I adore black cats. I had my best friend ever with one. When he passed it crushed me. He will never be replaced. Best luck ever with him.
Kim Hedges Do it! I brought in two stray black cats. Since then, black cats have become my favorite cat. Mini black panthers.
Cathy Maroney Best decision you’ll ever make! A vet once told me that black cats and black and white cats make the best pets! I agree with him! I’ve had several black cats and they’re all just precious!
Melanie Kowalewski I adore black cats. They are so underrated! Very sweet and absolutely beautiful, especially when the light glints on their fur. Such a rainbow of colors!
Carol Ann Ericsson I’ve had several… Love them… sweet, affectionate and very loving…cuddle bugs…
Debera Morrison Howard They are wonderful as any cat is. I will not entertain any superstitious ignorance.
Do Black Cats Get Adopted Less?
Unfortunately, black cats are statistically half as likely to be adopted as tabby cats.
Black cats make up 33% of the domestic cat population so can you imagine how many black cats need homes?
It is very pleasing to see an increasing awareness about this and I think people are starting to totally ignore the black cat superstitions.
My Final Thoughts on Black Cat Adoption
The subject of black cat adoption is very close to my heart as we adopted Coco and took him in from the street at just 3 months old.
You can read about the story here..
I never really considered myself a cat person until Coco came into our lives and I have to say it has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever experienced.
Coco has inspired me to build this website and bring together a wonderful community of black cat lovers from around the world via social media.
As you can see, the community is highly passionate about their cats and their advice is both powerful and heartwarming.
If you are about to or are thinking about adopting a black cat or any cat for that matter, my advice is to just go for it, you won’t regret it!
